About Jason Clanton

Jason Clanton obtained his Master's Degree of Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University with a 4.0 GPA. Jason began his psychology career working at a crisis and assessment center at community mental health before working for a private agency providing individual and group therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. He also provided crisis services at the Hillsdale County Jail and was the only one in Hillsdale County to administer guardianship assessments. In Jackson he was part of Mental Health Court, which provided criminal offenders with mental health issues an opportunity to receive treatment in light of incarceration. He also has taught Introduction to Counseling at Hope Africa University, Burundi, Africa and Introduction to Psychology at Spring Arbor University.

Jason has been a member of the National Association for Play Therapy since 2011 and a member of the Michigan Association of Play Therapy (MIAPT) since 2007. At MIAPT Jason has been Past President and Treasurer and currently serves on their annual conference committee and on their Board of Directors. Jason has had clients whose ages range from as young as two to older adults. In addition to play therapy Jason engages Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address a variety of problems as well as other evidenced-based practices.

Jason views counseling as a collaborative process between therapist and client, where the client leads their treatment while Jason introduces support and guidance to resolve whatever issues prevent clients from reaching their full potential. With children and teenagers he enjoys engaging in parent training and treatment in childhood ADHD, abuse, mood disorders, and disruptive behavior disorders. He enjoys working with adults with depressive disorders, adult survivors of abuse and trauma, anger management, dual diagnosis treatment, anxiety disorders, relationship issues, and religious/spiritual concerns. Jason uses knowledge from a variety of disciplines including philosophy, expressive arts, popular media, and psychobiology to maximize treatment effectiveness.
